A Preview of Apple’s iPad Mini Event

Apple's October 23rd Event Invite

Apple’s October 23rd event invite sent out to select members of the media

Today is the day that Apple will show off its latest offering, with expectations resting on a smaller, thinner and lighter iPad. Invites went out last week to select members of the media inviting them to the California Theatre in San Jose for a special event, Apple teased members of the media and onlookers with the simple phrase “We’ve got a little more to show you”.

Whilst I’m not a fan of overanalysing Apple’s invites it’s a safe assumption based on the strength of rumours and past knowledge of Apple’s subtle hints on invites that little is referring to the smaller 7.85-inch display iPad—expected to be dubbed “iPad mini”.

However the smaller iPad might not be only smaller product Apple has up its sleeve today, many are also expecting a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display to join its larger sibling that was released in June this year.

Today is the day, the venue is set, the press are descending on San Francisco, and the rumour mill is firing on all cylinders but something isn’t right. There’s a sense of disappointment, confusion, despair in the Apple community—in fact even outside of it. The subject is, “if this is the next iPhone, then what’s so special?”

It is this subject that I’ve been throwing around in my head for some weeks now. The rumours are about as set in stone as they can get although they remain rumours; we know what the—potentially named—iPhone 5 will look like, what features it has, what accessories it comes with and possibly whether iPods will be refreshed alongside it (I suspect quietly).

Live Updates From Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 Special Event

Apple’s special event will begin momentarily. Follow updates below (newest first). Manually refresh for updates.

  • Is there a reason why you won’t be able to see a timeline in Twitter or an IM conversation in the background? Answer: We think it works better with the push notifications as it’s in place now. The fast-app switching is very complicated and more impressive than what we demoed.
  • Given the huge demand of iPad demand in the US, will that impact the international launch? Jobs: No. It’ll still be near the end of April, like we said.
  • The development of these rich iAds…will Apple make a development platform for people to make these ads? Jobs: This isn’t necessary. They’re all HTML5 ads and people can choose any tools they want. As long as it’s HTML5.
  • Will iAds have an approval process? Jobs: “Um… well there’s going to be some process… but these people are paying to run ads. So, I’m not sure it’ll be anything other than a light touch.”
  • Will AT&T suffer due to increased data usage with multitasking? Jobs: No
  • Q&A with Steve Jobs, Phil Schiller and Scott Forstall.
  • Thats it, Q&A will follow.
  • iPhone OS 4.0 available for iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3G in Summer, available for iPad in Fall.
  • “We are releasing it for end users for iPhone and iPod touch for users this summer. For the 3GS and iPod touch 3rd gen. And, for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2nd gen, they will run many things… but there are some things they won’t run, like multitasking.”
  • “So let’s review. Multitasking, folders, enhanced mail, iBooks, enterprise, Game Kit, and iAd. And these are just seven of the 100 new user features. Now we are releasing a dev preview today.”
  • Advert has a built-in game to play, as well as the ability to tap into the Maps API.
  • Adverts within the app are completely interactive, built using HTML5.
  • Demo.
  • “Apple is going to sell and host the ads, and we’re going to do a 60/40 split.”
  • Interactive and video content ads
  • Ads keep you in the app
  • “What we want to do with iAds is deliver interaction and emotion.”
  • “The average user spends over 30 minutes every day using apps on their phone. If we said we wanted to put an ad up every 3 minutes, that’s 10 ads per device per day. That would be 1b ad opportunities per day.”
  • A new way for devs to get ads into their free or reasonable priced apps to make more money.
  • Feature 7: iAd
  • Apple has created a social gaming network with achievements, leader board and match making.
  • 50,000 games in the App Store
  • Major feature 6: Game center
  • Support for Exchange 2010 and new VPN options

  • Allow apps to be placed into folders on home screen, folder icon shows as a multi-icon.
  • Second major feature… App folders
  • Finally, fast app switching. Allows apps to freeze current state

  • Music continues playing when you’ve come out of Pandora.
  • Controller on lock screen also controls Pandora.
  • Demo of Pandora
  • Offering multitasking services as APIs to developers
  • Scott Forstall on stage to discuss how Apple has conserved battery and performance with multitasking
  • “Also, you see the new look of the dock. So that is multitasking. We’ve been using it a lot and it changes the way you use the iPhone.”
  • Switch between apps by double-clicking home button and a dock of running apps pulls up.
  • Mulitasking – “It’s easy to do this in a way that drains battery life, and a way that reduces performance of the foreground app. If you don’t do it right, your phone will feel sluggish.”

World of Apple will be offering live coverage of today’s media event which will take place at the Apple’s Infinite Loop offices in Cupertino.

Apple is set to show off the next major revision of iPhone OS. Details of what will be available in iPhone OS 4.0 are slim but expectations rest on the ability to have multiple apps open at once and switch between them and to be able to place contacts on the home screen. Rumours have also pointed to the ability to print from devices such as the iPhone, iPod touch and very recently the iPad.

In addition to a preview of iPhone OS 4.0 Apple is also expected to release a revision of the accompanying software development kit (SDK) which gives developers the tools to create apps for the platform. Within this new SDK it is likely that Apple will include tools to integrate mobile advertising through Apple’s new iAd platform.
