iPhone 5 September Release Speculation Mounts

Evidence is beginning to mount in favour of rumours about this years iPhone 5 release taking place in September rather than the previous June release.

Reuters today is quoting three sources who reportedly have “direct knowledge of the company’s supply chain” who say that Apple’s fifth generation iPhone will go into production in July or August and won’t ship until September.

The report collaborates a growing number of sources who claim that Apple will no longer stick to its predictable June release of iPhone hardware and will instead do so in September, possibly alongside its annual iPod refresh.

Reuters also provides a few other titbits of information about the iPhone 5 saying that the design will remain largely the same as the iPhone 4 and will feature a faster processor, presumably the A5 used in the iPad 2.

As is common with supply chain rumours Reuters does not name its sources but helps to corroborate the rumour by naming several iPhone 5 suppliers including Largan Precision who will make the camera module, Wintek who will supply the touchscreen panel and Foxconn who will manufacture the case.

iPad Software Reveals Expected and Unexpected

As is usual for latest iPhone OS releases delving into the softwares depths reveals some of Apple’s future roadmaps for mobile devices. The iPad which went on sale last Saturday runs a newer version of iPhone OS than any other device featuring version 3.2 compared to the iPhones 3.1.3.

Within the software is few surprises, as revealed by Boy Genius Report the files show that Apple is planning three new iPhone model and once again an unknown product is listed within.

The latest iPhone known as the 3GS is shown as ‘iPhone2,1’, the first number showing major changes in hardware such as processor and the second number revisions to that hardware. For example the original iPhone is ‘iPhone1,2’ and the iPhone 3G is ‘iPhone1,2’, both devices run the same processor but feature slightly different hardware configurations elsewhere.

The existence of ‘iPhone3,1’ is not surprising and was discovered as far back as March 2009 but the addition of two other iPhones suggests that Apple may be planning more than one iPhone hardware release this year.

As for the other listings, ‘iPod4,1’ refers to the newest iPod touch model presumably due for release in September 2010 and it is also assumed that ‘iProd2,1’ refers to a new model of iPad.

Verizon Wants the iPhone CEO Tells Apple

Chief executive office of Verizon said Tuesday that the U.S. carrier wants to have the iPhone on its network and went as far as to cite a report which stated Apple was creating a CDMA-capable device.

Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg spoke in front of the Council of Foreign Relations and while he did not say that the iPhone was coming to Verizon or whether talks were even in progress he did say that he has spoken to Apple and wants the company to carry the iPhone.

Seidenberg also cited a Wall Street Journal report that said Apple was working on a CDMA iPhone capable of working on the Verizon network.

Multitasking in iPhone OS 4.0 to Be Exposé Like?

It’s already been rumoured that the release of iPhone OS 4.0 later this year will bring the ability to run multiple apps at the same time but now details of how are being exposed by AppleInsider.

AppleInsider writes that iPhone OS 4.0 will allow multiple apps to run at the same time and allow easy switching between them using an Exposé like interface. Reportedly users will press the Home button twice bringing up a “series of icons representing the currently running apps”. Once a selection is made the app will zoom into focus.

Also rumoured for release in iPhone OS 4.0 is a unified inbox in Mail and the ability and the ability to add individual contacts to the home screen.

iPhone HD to Pack High-Resolution Display, Forward Facing Camera

On Monday the Wall Street Journal reported that next generation iPhone would debut this coming summer and that Apple “appears to be working on” a model compatible with carrier Verizon wireless.

The report was swiftly dismissed by influential blogger and notorious Apple rumour king John Gruber as “WSJ’s Lame Entry in the iPhone Rumors Game”. Gruber criticised the WSJ for offering no substance, going on to detail what would appear to be key details of the fourth-generation iPhone.

Gruber goes onto point out that the next iPhone will pack an A4-family CPU, a 960×640 “double-resolution” display, front facing camera and third party multi-tasking in iPhone OS 4.0.

In a separate report Engadget claims that the next iPhone will be named “iPhone HD” according to an anonymous tipster, the same tipster adding that the newest iPhone would be released on June 22.

According to a new rumour Apple will silence the critics by bringing multitasking to the next major update to the iPhone operating system. The update will allow “several third party apps to run concurrently and in the background” writes AppleInsider.

According to AppleInsider “people with a proven track record” say that Apple has developed a “full-on solution” to multitasking on the iPhone. Details of how multitasking was implemented was withheld from the sources as iPhone OS 4.0 development “has a quite ‘way to go’ before it’s ready for prime time.”

AppleInsider goes onto cite a multitude of reasons why Apple has yet to implement multitasking, looking at security and hardware resource issues.

Apple to Announce Verizon iPhone?

Peter Misek, analyst with Canaccord Adams speculated this week that Apple will announce during its special event on January 27 that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon during the summer.

Alongside this prediction Misek also expects Apple to announce iPhone OS 4.0. In Misek’s note he runs down what he expects to see in iPhone OS 4.0 with his predictions running along the same lines as those rumoured by Boy Genius Report earlier in the week including, multitasking, a simpler user interface, and a new way to sync contacts and calendar apps.

Misek goes onto suggest that although many U.S. carriers will adopt tiered data plans, the iPhone on Verizon will still carry an unlimited data plan according to his “industry sources”.

“Together with our semi-conductor partners, we have ascertained that there is a reasonable chance the Asian supply chain is prepping for mass production of a new iPhone in March, for availability in late Q2, likely June,” Misek said. The new iPhone according to Misek will be capable of running on both CDMA and GSM networks.

Misek also looks forward to 2011 iPhone models speculating that Apple will release an LTE-capable “4GS” iPhone.

Features of iPhone OS 4.0 Rumoured

A new batch of rumours concerning iPhone OS 4.0 have circulated the internet today in particular the rumours point towards “multitasking” and a new method of syncing contacts and calendars.

The rumours which come from a “trusty” source are published by Boy Genius Report and go as follows:

  • There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
“A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.

  • Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
  • The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”
  • The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

Apple is holding a media event on Wednesday, January 27 in San Francisco and is widely expected to announce its long-rumoured tablet computer alongside discussions of iPhone OS 4.0 and accompanying SDK.

2010 iPhone to Have 5-Megapixel Camera?

DigiTimes is reporting that Omnivision Technologies has received an order for 5-megapixel optical sensors destined for the next-generation iPhone. The sources suggest that Omnivision is expected to supply Apple with between 40-50 million sensors in 2010.

OmniVision Technologies is expected to see CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders for Apple’s iPhone devices grow to 40-45 million units in 2010 from 20-21 million estimated this year, according to industry sources. The sources said OmniVision has secured 5-megapixel CIS orders for the next-generation iPhone model, which will hit shelves sometime during the second half of 2010.

Omnivision is the current supplier of the iPhone 3GS 3.2-megapixel sensor.
