According to a new report from Gartner the iPhone has showed a 327.5 percent market share increase in worldwide smartphone sales for the third-quarter of 2008.

Apple’s iPhone grew it’s market share from 3.4 percent in quarter 3 of 2007 to 12.9 in the same quarter of 2008. The rise puts Apple in third place behind Nokia and RIM in the smartphone market.

Those figures represent worldwide market share but when looking at North America alone Apple holds second place behind RIM with 25.4 percent of the smartphone market. The same goes for Europe where Apple is in second place behind Nokia with 15.6 percent market share.

In Gartner’s report analyst Roberta Cozza noted that economic issues around the world had slowed smartphone sales adding that iPhone sales exceeded sales of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices worldwide.
